If one were to check down the story line of our favorite TV show closely, it shall be noticed that in its light humorous manner, incest themes have been too well depicted and fairly in a good quantity over the three season run of the show.
Take the instance of George Michael who is infatuated by his own cousin Maeby, but it is not fully known that if she is really his cousin or not. Very interestingly, Steve Holt appeals to Maeby, and again, whether the two are cousins or not, is quite uncertain.
The “Afternoon Delight”, which is a season second episode, has Maeby and Michael voicing Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band, clearly not anticipating what the actual nature of the song is.
Then if you recall the “Family Ties” episode, Michael assumes, Nellie Bluth to be his elder sister, whereas Nellie feels that Michael is just lustful for her. Michael is later seduced by Lindsay too, when she learns that she is an adopted child and not his blood sister.
But a negative side, which has again very funnily been portrayed about incest is, Michael’s girlfriend Rita, who is mentally not very developed as her parents are actually cousins. Then Oscar’s affection for Lucille, are also too well known, even though they are not related by the virtue of blood, but just through marriage.
So clearly, the moral debate on whether incest is ok or not always rages on, especially in grown up families’ these days. But on Arrested Development, where there is no end to the fun and hoopla, and where so many social issues are taken up, this one really scores the goal.
That is because they have shown the various sides and dimensions to the theme and not just brazenly used it for the advantage of ratings or anything like that.
